Now that you know what pneumono … osis means, have a go at saying it! Remember that it is just a collection of smaller parts. It is quite a good party trick to be able to pronounce the longest word in the dictionary. However, the word itself is not important; what is important is what it teaches us how to build our vocabulary gradually by recognising word families. (Note that the word was made up in 1935, not by doctors, but by Everett Smith, the president of the National Puzzlers League - so it really is just a word made up for fun!)
