PARAGRAPHS

Nowadays we indicate paragraphing by indenting the first line of a paragraph or by leaving a line of space after a paragraph. This was not always the case. Instead, a symbol called a pilcrow (ΒΆ) was used in the margin to indicate topic changes - and it is from this that we get the word paragraph (from the Greek paragraphos, meaning written beside).

Pilcrows are still used in word-processing programs. They don't show up in printouts but you can see them on the screen. They may be turned off on your machine but try looking for the way to turn them on. Then your on-screen document will resemble an ancient one.
