INTERROGATIVES

Questions are often introduced by words such as where, what, how, when, why. These are known as interrogatives. The word interrogative is in the same word family as interrogation (a questioning). The question mark is also known as an interrogation mark.

Questions are also introduced by such words as have, is, are, were, would, could. In some other languages, for example Spanish, an opening (upside down) question mark is used as well as a closing one, so that the reader has a clear signal that a question is being asked. ¿Does that seem like a good idea?
