CAPITALS
The word capital comes from the Latin caput, capitalis, which means the head (the chief, the top). A capital city is thus the head city. We place capital letters at the head (start) of a sentence and to mark the head (start) of important nouns such as people's proper names, the names of books and so on. We put caps on our heads. The fancy stonework on the top of building columns is called the capital. A capital idea is a 'top' idea!
