Did You Know?

PLACE NAMES AND APOSTROPHES

Is it Queen's Road or Queens' Road? Princes Park or Prince's Park? Place names can create a lot of confusion but there is one simple, although unusual, answer. In the 1960s, the official body that decides what places in Australia should be called made a rule that apostrophes would not be used in any Australian place names (including street and road names). This is why Australia has such ungrammatical, unpunctuated and awkward-sounding place names as Cooper Creek, Crows Nest, Fishermans Bend, Flinders Ranges, Haasts Bluff, Halls Creek, Kings Park, Princes Highway, Queens Beach, St Georges Terrace, Spencer Gulf and Surfers Paradise.
